The 9th king "Shamba Bolongolongo" learned raffia weaving techniques and wood carving from neighboring peoples before ascending to the throne. He transmitted his art to his people and asked a renowned artist to make a statue of him so that he and his laws would be remembered. The statue is considered the first of Kuba art (16th century).
